HotelWorldMap.com

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Alright…next on the block is HotelWorldMap.com, which is for sale on web2.0forsale.com. The asking price for this site is $50,000. Now, I checked this site out and I do think it is kind of neat. You can pick hotels based on where they are located compared to popular landmarks….sort of cool. Most sites you can just see where the hotel is on a map, but not relative to landmarks in the area. BUT…this is definitely not worth $50K. There are a couple of problems.
1.) The site only seems to have hotels in Amsterdam…or Europe anyway. I tried typing in some major US cities and it didnt’ work for any of them. That needs to be fixed.
2.) As far as I can see…there is no way to refine the results. You should be able to filter out hotels that are over a certain amount or whatever…you basically can just see all the hotels in the area and thats it.
3.) And this is the biggest problem…ITS A MASHUP! Basically its taking Hotel.com’s database and overlaying it on a Google Map. There are high school kids that can make a mashup like this during study hall.

I do think the concept of this is a decent one…searching for hotels based on map location (it really lets you see where exactly the hotel is compared to everything else)…but the site needs to be world wide, not just Europe. You need to be able to filter out hotels…based on price at the minimum. And I wouldn’t pay more than $1500 for this site…and that might be a stretch.

X13 update

Surprise, surprise….X13’s sale on eBay didn’t pan out. I wonder why no one thought the $250K was a good idea???

X13 - Online form & database service

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Ok, this one is a no-brainer. X13 is selling their Online form & database service for $250,000 on eBay and on Web2.0forsale.com. $250,000??? I looked at this service and tried out the demo. I use a free service called Wufoo which is far superior to this X13 offering. Same with another offering from FormLogix. Both of these services have a much better layout than X13 and you are able to embed your forms into your own webpages…from what I could tell, all you can do with X13 is link to the form. And the forms look pretty crappy compared to Wufoo. Not to mention, X13 isn’t selling any existing site with users, just the actual code and database so you can start from scratch. You could use eLance or RentACoder.com and get your own developed from scratch for much, much, much less than $250K. I’m not sure who they think they are going to get to buy this for that much money…but I guess we’ll see. If anyone out there is really interested in starting their own Form site, check out Wufoo and FormLogix first to see what your up against, then see how much to get it developed by coders at eLance or RentACoder. My guess is less than $20,000. Then you can take the $230,000 you just saved and use that towards marketing your new site.

SynapseLife Update

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Well it looks like SynapseLife was able to sell itself on eBay for $60,000. There was not apparently a lot of interest in this site though, as only 1 person actually made a bid. The first bid was for $50,000, but I guess that the reserve was not met, so the second bid was for $60,000 and ended up being the magic number. So I am glad these guys were able to sell SynapseLife…but I really hope the winning bidder has a good plan for this purchase.
